Types of Umpires
New this year! Laramie Youth Baseball is offering two types of umpire positions - volunteer and paid.
- Volunteer: Those parents who volunteer a minimum of 5 or more games a year are eligible to receive a discount on registration up to one complimentary registration for a child participating in the 2025 Laramie Youth Baseball season based on the total number of games umpired.

FAQs
Who can umpire?
Anyone 13 or older can be an umpire. While prior experience is encouraged, it is not a requirement. Training will be offered. The minimum age to umpire is 14 for paid umpires and 13 for volunteer umpires. Youth umpires ages 13-17 are required to work under the supervision of an adult umpire or if umpiring games on their own will have an adult “game coordinator” present.
How much do umpires get paid per game?
Pay varies by division and number of umpires. See the pay structure included at the bottom of this page.
What training requirements are there for umpires?
Both volunteer and paid volunteers are encouraged to attend training sessions that will be offered by Laramie Youth Baseball.
How will scheduling work for umpires?
Umpire scheduling for both paid and volunteer umpires will be conducted through a software program that allows umpires to self-select or be assigned games to work. The umpire contract outlines the protocol for scheduling, including cancellations.
Umpire Safety - What considerations should I take into account? Umpiring can be a dangerous activity. Paid umpires assume the risk associated with the activity and are encouraged to purchase their own insurance. Recommendations and options can be provided. Volunteer umpires are covered under the Laramie Youth Baseball insurance.
Are umpires responsible for providing their own equipment?Umpires are encouraged to provide their own safety equipment. Laramie Youth Baseball does have a limited quantity of equipment that can be used for free. Laramie Youth Baseball does offer prorated reimbursement on equipment and applicable training based on the number of games worked in a season.
What other requirements should I be aware of? All umpires, regardless of in a paid position or volunteer position are required to perform a background check and complete the requirements of Little League “Child Protection Program” requirements.
Are paid umpires employees of Laramie Youth Baseball?Paid umpires are independent contractors and are not an employee of Laramie Youth Baseball. Paid umpires are responsible for any self employment taxes and insurance. If payment earned requires, per IRS independent contractor laws, a standard IRS form 1099 will be provided in January, following the season worked.
Does becoming a paid umpire impact my ability to umpire other leagues?
Paid umpires are free to umpire for other organizations.
